Our View: Annual Trivia event showcases
Stevens Point

Being connected to something big can be a fun experience, and having
something unique for your hometown is also special, and our community is
lucky to have both.
At 6 p.m., Friday, Stevens Point will once again
be the epicenter of all things trivia when "Trivia 40: Here's looking at
you, kid" kicks off and runs 54 hours until midnight on Sunday.
As the self-proclaimed world's largest trivia
contest, the event draws people from around the world as almost 500 teams
will compete in the event, which raises money for 90FM WWSP, the
not-for-profit, student-run radio station at the University of
Wisconsin-Stevens Point.
During the event, eight questions are read each
hour and teams have the length of two songs to call in their answers. There
also will be a variety of specialty questions including a treasure
hunt-style series of clues scattered around Stevens Point. Trophies are
given to the top 10 teams with the highest points.
The event kicks off on Friday with a parade
starting near Lot Q on the UWSP campus featuring floats from many of the
registered teams and a 90FM float. Even if you aren't participating in the
contest, you should stop by and check it out. The excitement for the start
of this three-day odyssey could get you hooked.
To some, it might be hard to believe that an
event so big -- it inspired the award-winning documentary "Triviatown" --
could come from Stevens Point. The fact that it does is a tribute to the
thousands of people who participate, whether as players, organizers or
volunteers. These people have taken Trivia a long way from the 16 teams who
competed back in 1969.
Not only is this event an invaluable resource to
90FM to keep its program running, but it is also a great boost to the local
economy.
Hundreds of people will make their way to the
city this weekend, and while here they will be taking over people's homes or
apartments, and spending money. They'll be heading to the grocery store to
stock up on plenty of provisions from frozen pizza, soda, beer and anything
else they can get their hands on. They'll be at the restaurants, bars,
hotels, coffee shops and more.
It's what makes Trivia a great event. People who
have played for years come back to town, maybe their hometown, to continue a
tradition that in some cases spans into decades. They come to participate in
a worldwide event that began right here in Stevens Point and benefits not
only a great radio station that serves the community and UWSP students, but
also our local businesses.
For that we say thank you, and good luck this
weekend.
