Journal April 15, 2009:
Trivia contestants, organizers remember
longtime announcer

When WWSP 90FM kicks off its trivia contest with its customary song, "Born
to be Wild," it won't be accompanied by the only voice the contest has ever
known.
"Tom and 'Born to be Wild' to start Trivia always
went together," said Ken Manske, referring to longtime Trivia voice Tom
Daniels, who died of a heart attack during last year's event. "It's going to
be different hearing one without the other."
Manske, who plays on the team Mutated Members,
will be one of thousands of veteran players who will have to adjust to a new
voice this year. Daniels had done the on-air teasers, commercials and all
the introductions since they began in 1974.
"His voice, more than anybody or anything, was
synonymous with Trivia," said Jim "Oz" Oliva, the main organizer.
After Daniels died, Oliva wasn't sure which
direction to go for the on-air voice. Should he keep trying to use Daniel's
voice, reworking in the new information, or just cut ties and go with a new
person?
Oliva decided to find someone new. He spent all
summer and fall finding the right person, someone who would be committed for
a long haul, allowing listeners to get comfortable with someone else as they
were with Daniels.
But just because there is a fresh voice, a
yet-to-be-identified person Oliva wouldn't disclose, doesn't mean anyone
will be forgetting Daniels anytime soon.
The contest's first-place trophy will be named
after him, so every year, he will get a deserving recognition.
"Everybody is going to miss him," Manske said.
"But to name a trophy after you, that's pretty good."
