“They are the kings. They have won more than 15 times,” said Jim "The Oz" Oliva, coordinator of the 39th annual, 54-hour marathon that ended late Sunday night.
Network compiled 10,035 points, defeating Graduates of a Lesser God with 8,900 points. Tin Man, which won last year’s contest, finished third with 8,820 points.
The contest attracted 433 teams, Oliva said today. Only two failed to score any points.

The contest involves eight questions read every hour on WWSP 90 FM, the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point radio station. Contestants search books, the Internet, movies and other sources for answers.

The final day of the contest was marked by sadness. Longtime announcer Tom Daniels, 57, died unexpectedly Sunday of an apparent heart attack, Oliva said.
Daniels had been involved with the contest since 1974, lending his voice for promotions and other duties, Oliva said.
“The opening of the contest is him building excitement and believe me, it does,” Oliva said. “He loved doing this.”
Daniels did a four-hour shift on the radio Saturday afternoon and spent some of the night “chatting” with friends, Oliva said. “He went to bed and did not wake up.”

Network has more than 20 team members who come from all over the country to compete in the contest, Oliva said. The team, which includes people who grew up in the Stevens Point area, has competed in more than 30 contests.
“They just do the research,” Oliva said. “They have people who are very computer savvy who are able to code all their own data. When they take notes, they have developed their own data bases.”
About 70,000 correct answers were phoned in during this year’s competition. Oliva said. If all the teams answered all the questions correctly, there would be about 195,000 correct answers, he said.
