From the Stevens Point Journal April 20, 2007:

Radio station gears up for Trivia 38

The University of Wisconsin Stevens Point campus radio station, 90FM WWSP, will broadcast the 38th annual worlds largest trivia contest on April 20, 21, and 22. The first question of the 54-hour contest will go on the air at 6 p.m. Friday, April20 and will end on Sunday, April 22 at midnight.

“Trivia Returns” is the theme for trivia 2007 with honors to the superhero character Superman. The logo has a similar look to Superman’s colors and attire.

Registration for 90 FM WWSP’s trivia contest will continue today, Friday April 20 from 12- 6 in the 90 FM WWSP’s office, which is located at 105 CAC Building on Reserve Street in Stevens Point, Wisconsin. Currently there are 378 registered teams and 9, 839 players, but the numbers are expected to grow. One other unique aspect of Trivia 38 is on this year’s parade a couple will tie the knot and be married. The parade starts at 4 p.m. on Friday April 20, 2007 in front of the 90 FM station.

The contest is composed of eight questions that are read every hour for 54 hours. Teams are permitted one phone call per question, and have the duration of two songs to answer. The questions are all given point values from 5 to 500 based on the amount of teams answering correctly. There are two hours during the contest when only four questions are asked. This allows time to read all of the team standings. There is approximately 438 questions total. Additional components of the contest are Running Questions, Music Questions, and the Trivia Stone Question. Running Questions involve teams going out into the community to search for answers. The Music Questions are asked three times throughout the contest and include sound bits from eight songs. Teams must decipher what the name of the song is to get the point values.

Last year 90FM’s annual Trivia contest drew over 12,000 players that made up nearly 500 teams. Contestants travel from all over the United States, and some even from Europe to come to Stevens Point, Wisconsin for the trivia contest.

90 FM WWSP is the non-profit, student-run radio station at the University of Wisconsin- Stevens Point. It’s the largest station of its kind in the Midwest, 90 FM can be found at the FM freq3ncy of 89.9; broadcasting commercial free 365 days a year from 6 a.m. to 2 a.m.
