From the Stevens Point Journal April 19, 2004:

It's not a trivial pursuit
Day after Trivia, players rest, grill out, stay home

By KATE GARSOMBKE

If Herb Lessmiller had his way, the day after Trivia weekend would be a local holiday.

There'd be no alarm clocks and no work--just lots of sleep, followed by lots of grilling out.

Lessmiller learned the hard way about the day after Trivia last year, when he decided to go into work on Monday following the little sleep he got throughout the weekend. "I was fuzzy. I was really tired. I think I drank six cups of coffee. I just made it through to 5 (p.m.). I went to bed at 5:15," he said.

This year is different. He put in his vacation time at the beginning of the year, along with several other co-workers at Associated Bank, where he works. "I think Monday is going to be a scarce day" in his department, he said.

Many teams, like Lessmiller's Team Diesel, have their own post-Trivia traditions. For most, it includes taking the day off from work, getting lots of rest and cleaning up the mess from the weekend. Team Diesel likes to cook up brats, kielbasa and "any other type of tubular meat." "Grilling out and hanging out. That's the main goal," Lessmiller said.

Employers in the area notice a dent in the numbers of their staff on Monday after the world's largest Trivia contest. At Noel Group, one of the area's major employers, between 4 and 8 percent of workers take off the day after Trivia weekend, said Dan McGinnity, vice president of communications.

"It's probably not quite as many as spring break, but definitely more than your average Monday," he said.

U Bet Your Sweet Oz started its post-Trivia celebration at midnight Sunday. "We bring beer out right after the last question is answered," said Debbie MacDonald, who hosts the team at her home.

But when Monday morning comes, it's tear-down day at MacDonald's house. Team members sort out the books stuffed on bookshelves throughout the home that they've checked out from libraries throughout Wisconsin and Minnesota, said Jason MacDonald, Oshkosh.

Angel Heinemann, who plays Trivia out of her Wausau home, drives to Stevens Point on Monday for an annual post-Trivia meal with teammates from the Stevens Point-based team, Freshly Squeezed. "We're usually functional by 10 or 11. We have a meal together and talk everything over and unwind," she said.

Heinemann also learned firsthand about the pain of working the Monday after Trivia. "The first year we played, we had to work the weekend and it was hell on Earth, so now we schedule the day before and the day after as no work," she said.
