From the Stevens Point Journal April 14, 2004:

Amherst Trivia team boasts wacky heritage

By Journal Staff

TRIVIA TEAM INSIDER
Team Name: Amherst Whale Watch, submitted by Ken Zwickey
How the team got its name: We wanted a name that identifies us as an out-of-town team and also showed our concern for the environment.

We also have a humorous story we tell about how our team came to be called the Whale Watch. The story goes, we were a poorly funded anthropological study team, who was working on a theory that whales were once land mammals and migrated every five years. We heard that they may have originated in the Tomorrow River and so every spring we would gather with binoculars to watch for the possible migration of whales. You can imagine that this was somewhat boring, and while listening to the radio one year, chanced across the trivia contest. We now combine our field study with Trivia play.

How many players are on the team: Our team has grown from 10 players our first year to between 15 and 20 players and between 50 and 60 total participants.

How long they've played: This will be our 19th year as a team, although some of us have played since the contest started.

The highest the team has placed: 28th
Their most-prized reference tool: We have about 1,500 movie notes.

Team traditions: Every year we have a Trivia banner signed by everyone who comes that year. We do Jell-O shots every 1,000 points and we have a standard question that is asked if someone has an answer that no one else can verify: "Are you willing to take your clothes off?" We have a set of Trivia rules, one of them being "When in doubt, mumble." We also have memorabilia for each year, such as T-shirts, mugs, ID cards, bumper stickers, etc.

High point of your team's career: The year we answered a 500-point question.

Low point of your team's career: The year we lost our electricity for several hours and couldn't call in any answers.

The Journal will be running a Trivia team profile each day this week leading up to the 35th annual contest, which starts Friday night.
