Trivia
Movie Plans Should Be Known in 6 Months

Trivia players should know within about six months whether their stories will be told on the big screen.
Patrick Cady, 34, a Hoboken, N.J. cinematographer, was in Stevens Point this weekend to finish a short promotional
film he will use to attract funding for an independent film about the world's largest trivia contest. He
learned about Trivia through his wife, Jill, a Stevens Point native.
If funding is secured, Cady plans to film the movie at next year's Trivia contest, with a debut scheduled at
the 2005 Sundance Film Festival - and Stevens Point, as well.
Cady filmed portions of Trivia the past two years, and has been working on the idea with a group of producers.
"Anyone I show the fundraising tape to gets excited about it," Cady said. "They all want to know
more. The producers that are working on this right now are doing it for free because they believe in it. It's
almost a can't miss because it's middle America and there are so many interesting characters in it."
Trivia also is special because, as lead contest organizer Jim "Oz" Oliva has said, it's played in
Stevens Point like it's played nowhere else, Cady added.
"It's a small town that gets behind this kind of crazy idea. There are teams that just party all weekend
and teams that work at it all year," Cady said. "One reason I ask them is, 'Why? Why do you get
involved in this?' It's kind of insane, but that's what so interesting about it."
Cady estimated that he'll need $150,000 to $300,000 to shoot "Trivia U.S.A." That sounds like a
lot of money, but for a feature film, it's relatively cheap; the biggest reason is that the movie can be
filmed in one weekend, which cuts production costs, he said.
