The 1970s...
This is the page where you can read about CNOF’s history and team member recollections ordered by contest year. CNOF was first used as a team name in the last year of the 70s decade, but many of our team members have played the contest under different team names since 1973.

If you would like to contribute some history to this archive, please drop me a note with the details.

The team story year by year...

1973 Copper Nickle

Vic Ziolkowski, Tom Lewandowski, and Pat Losinski play the contest as Copper Nickle while splitting their time between the Ziolkowski and Lewandowski homes. The main resource for answers was the World Book Encyclopedia. The Ziolkowskis had to get a new phone after this contest.

1974 Rebel Rousers/Ma’s Children

An early contest for many of us. Vic and Lush play the contest as Ma’s Children. Rebel Rousers finished in 47th place with 750 points while playing at Brad Flatoff’s home without using any books. Contest rules allowed us to guess as many times as we wanted vastly improving our chances of getting questions correct. This was the first contest for many including Brad Flatoff, Chris Fisher, and Kip Marko.

1975 Rebel Rousers

Terry Wiegert’s and Dan Olson’s first full-time contest. I think we played at Brad Flatoff’s house on Friday and then switched to John Thurmaier’s on Saturday. A 16th place finish using the Guinness Book of World Records, almanacs and magazines.

1976 Rebel Rousers/Stoff’s Rough Riders

Rebel Rousers finished in approximately 28th place. Again, the team again splits its time between Flatoff’s and Thurmaier’s. This was the first time we could drive a car to get the running questions. Well, not all of us, but Mike Thomas could in his yellow Karmann Ghia. Mike had no problem chasing answers at maximum speed which for him was 70 mph (in a 25 mph zone). Stoff’s Rough Riders was a skeleton crew of four people playing with a couple of almanacs at the Pollock home. Stoff's team finished 42nd.

1977 Rebel Rousers/Victoria Station/Occupation: Foole

Rebel Rousers plays at Brad Flatoff’s home before switching to Phil Kluge’s house on Saturday. Kip Marko masters “the mumble technique” when calling in answers. Terry Wiegert defects to Kerry Yndestad’s house as a member of Victoria Station. Occupation: Foole is born, named after the George Carlin album. The team first played out of Kevin Worzella’s basement. The favorite answer of that year: “Oh my God it’s Hector Hinkle” (a character on Pennsylvania Dutch Candy). Victoria finishes in 4th with 5025 points while Foole finishes in 8th place.

1978 Or/Occupation: Foole

Foole wins the contest for the first time with 5365 points playing in Jack Wimme’s basement. The Miller Milk question in hour 54 puts the contest on ice. The “while you were asleep...” practical joke was born along with its first victim: Mark “Jurge” Jurgella (The “question” had to do with Mrs. Kotter’s plant). Leave It To Beaver’s Hugh Beaumont is about to become a household name in Stevens Point as we are asked about him for the first time. Or plays at Jeff Gorski’s family home. Terry slinks back from his “lost weekend” with Victoria Station. This was the year everybody left to go to a party with the exception of Brad Flatoff (not that he wasn’t invited). Brad puts on a one man show until the socialites get back. I think I smell Chris Fisher’s socks burning as Or finishes out of the money in 11th place.

1979 City News/Occupation: Foole

The first year with The Oz Jim Oliva running the show. This is also the first year contests have slogans—this contest is cleverly called “The Contest.” Jack Wimme assists in writing questions for The Oz. Occupation: Foole begins a two year gig playing in Dennis and Rita Lynch’s basement (yes, another basement). Tight quarters spawns first Foole Airwick purchase. Denny spends hours 55+ chasing after their dog Retard, who runs out of the house as people leave. Brad Flatoff gets some cash from his grandfather and Jim Fiegleson of the City News bookstore in Stevens Point. In exchange for the money, we call ourselves City News for the first time. Brad discovers Burr “Ox” Oxley in the bookstore—an event leading to Ox and Theresa joining the team. Foole finishes in 2nd place with 5730 points while City News, playing at the Gorski home improves to 6th place.
